More information about Solana Beach

Solana Beach is a small beach community just north of Del Mar, CA. With the Pacific Ocean directly to the West, Solana beach is an ideal location for breathtaking views and premier weather. Sitting directly to the east is Rancho Santa Fe, an unincorporated village, and home to some of the most extravagant houses in the entire County.

The area was first settled by the Jones family in 1886 and used for farming. When the Lake Hodges dam was built, the Solana beach area started to expand rapidly. The Jones family sold a large portion of what is now known as the City of Solana beach to a developer named Ed Fletcher in 1922. In 1923 the area once known as Lockwood Mesa became known as Solana Beach, and began to develop very rapidly. The entire coastline from Solana beach to Oceanside was being heavily developed from the end of World War II all the way through the real estate boom in the late 20th century. In 1986 the city was incorporated and became known as the City of Solana Beach, CA.

Although the city is a fairly small, tranquil town, in 2003 Solana Beach was nationally recognized as the first city to ban smoking on its public beaches. Since then, many towns in California have followed suit, and most beaches in California have now outlawed smoking. In 2008 the city received more national attention when a long-time resident was attached and killed by a great white shark while swimming off the coast of Solana Beach.
