More information about Point Loma

Point Loma is a neighborhood of San Diego located on the Pacific Ocean just north of Down Town San Diego and east of the beach community Ocean Beach. The peninsula of Point Loma separates San Diego Bay from the Pacific Ocean.

Point Loma was first discovered in the 1500’s when European explorers departed from Mexico to explore the west coast of what is now the United States. The explorers eventually landed in Point Loma, noting that the bay was an excellent enclosed port, and for this reason it is said that Point Loma is where California began.

Point Loma developed fairly slowly, with no real changes for more than 200 years. At this point, in the 1700’s, Europeans established a mission in San Diego, and used Point Loma as its main beach escape and port access. Point Loma was used as the main port in San Diego until the now downtown area was established. Sailors used Point Loma’s beaches as a resting place for their boats for years.

Ballast Point, one of Point Loma’s more historical spots, is said to have gotten its name from the practice of ships discarding their ballast after arriving at San Diego Bay, and picking it back up as they left the bay. The grounds of Ballast point are now part of the Point Loma Naval Base.

A very important historical note, there was once a dirt strip in Point Loma called Dutch Flats in the area now known as the Midway neighborhood, which was once used as an air strip. This air strip was where Charles Lindbergh first tested and flew the infamous Spirit of St. Louis, which was built by a local San Diego company. There is now a post office located on the site containing many historical plaques commemorating Lindbergh’s accomplishment on Dutch Flats.
