More information about El Cajon

El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California that is a little more inland. The population as of 2000 was 94,869. El Cajón is Spanish for "The Drawer" which was named because it is surrounded by mountains. This geography also gave rise to the town nickname which is "The Big Box."

Originally the surrounding foothills were a barrier to straying cattle as well as a watershed to gather the rainfall for crops and animals. This was done for years before El Cajon developed to what it is today. By 1940 the population had slightly more than doubled to 1,471.

As the City neared the end of the twentieth century its growth is considerably more measured and systematic than every expected. It has gone through rapid growth periods with an increase in government contracts. In 1976, a new civic center was opened to serve the citizens of El Cajon. The most recent additions to El Cajon are the new Fire Stations and Neighborhood Center on Lexington and Douglas Avenues. Overall El Cajon as grown into a well established San Diego community.
